Samsung may be forced to equip the 128GB variant of the Samsung Galaxy S23 with slower UFS 3.1 storage. It would be the most affordable of the company’s flagship phones in 2023 and is expected to be priced at $799.99 in the US. According to a reliable Twitter tipster ice universe, Samsung does not produce a 128 GB version of its UFS 4.0 chip. This means that if a Galaxy S23 buyer wants a Galaxy S23 with the fastest UFS chip, they will have to spend the extra money to buy the unit with 256GB of storage.
Now let’s be clear. We are only talking about the Galaxy S23 model since the Galaxy S23+ and The Galaxy S23 Ultra will both start with 256GB of storage. Simply put, UFS, or Universal Flash Storage, reads from and writes to your phone’s memory simultaneously. Obviously, the faster these operations can be performed, the faster and smoother your phone will be. UFS 4.0 is, according to Samsung, more than twice as fast as the previous UFS 3.1 standard, which is why those planning to buy the Galaxy S23 could pay for 256 GB of storage.
UFS 4.0 offers 4200 Mbps sequential read speed and 2800 Mbps sequential write speed. This compares to a sequential read speed of 2100 MB/s and a sequential write speed of up to 1200 MB/s for UFS 3.1. Additionally, UFS 4.0 is said to be 46% more power efficient, which could extend the battery life of a handset using UFS 4.0. And that gives consumers yet another reason to pay for the 256GB model of the Galaxy S23.

Ice Universe points out that even though Samsung does not produce a 128GB UFS 4.0 chip, but a company called Kioxia does. However, Mr. Universe notes that during testing, the Kioxia chip was unable to deliver the expected performance of the UFS 4.0 chip. So, as the tipster writes, “Even if used, the performance isn’t up to par and it can’t be called UFS 4.0, so it’s reasonable to use UFS 3.1 for 128GB.”
