A former Bethesda developer who worked on multiple Fallout games, Skyrim and the upcoming Starfield is working on a mythical hunting sim and has just revealed that you’ll be able to explore the fantasy game world without having to worry about an obscure creature from folklore. tearing you into thousands of little pieces, which is nice.
Nate Purkeypile is currently working on The Axis Unseen, an open-world game that focuses on hunting creatures from global folklore. The Axis Unseen is five times bigger than Skyrim, Purkeypile making the world bigger and filled with drastically different biomes as it doesn’t have or need caves and interior spaces like a game like Skyrim would .
There are many environments to explore that undergo dramatic visual changes depending on the time of day, from snow-capped peaks to lush forests with light streaming through the trees. Dark Swamps are also included if you want to get a FromSoftware feel of The Axis Unseen.
The beauty of The Axis Unseen hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans and Purkeypile as, in response to a fan fearing he’d get killed by stopping to take loads of screenshots, Purkeypile said, “I plan to add a photo mode and a pacifist mode for people who just want to relax and explore instead of getting murdered by monsters.
More open-world games that focus on combat (which, let’s face it, there are a lot of them) absolutely should. It may break the game’s loop somewhat, but it’s a great idea for anyone who really wants to turn off the heads-up display and take in the world around them, like taking a virtual nature walk with your camera.
The Axis Unseen isn’t all Purkeypile has been working on lately; we did a Starfield interview with him, as he was still at Bethesda relatively early in the development of the game. He told us all about the size of the workforce and how the team also created a completely new IP address. Purkeypile also had a lot of Fallout 5 ideas (but he didn’t work on the game at all), if you’re interested in those.
You can read more about The Axis Unseen and list it on Steam.
