As Hollywood anticipates the announcement of this year’s Oscar nominations on January 24, many corporations and guilds have already revealed their favorites. That includes the sound ones, for which the Academy had narrowed its scope to a diverse list of 10 films, among them Edward Berger’s World War I drama In the west, nothing is newby James Cameron Avatar: The Way of the WaterDamien Chazelle BabylonMatt Reeves’ The Batman and Ryan Coogler Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
The shortlist is completed by that of Baz Luhrmann ElvisDaniel’s Everything everywhere all at oncestop motion Pinocchio by Guillermo del ToroBrett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary Lunar Reverie and Joseph Kosinski Top Gun: Maverick.
How have these movies fared so far with their peers?
MPSE Gold Reel Award
Everywhere leads the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE) Golden Reel Awards feature film competition, which announced its names on January 9. feature film.
The Batman and maverick are each nominated for dialogue/ADR and effects/Foley editing. Elvis is nominated for Dialogue/ADR and Music Editing; Pinocchio also won a nod for Music Editing, as well as Sound Editing in an Animated Feature. Lunar Reverie received two nominations in the documentary categories, for Sound Editing and Music Editing. Everyone is silent and The way of the water picked up only one Golden Reel nomination each.
Cinema Audio Society Award
While Everywhere leads the sound editing feature nominations, it was snubbed by sound mixers. The Cinema Audio Society Awards, which honor sound mixing, were nominated instead Everyone is silent, The way of the water, The Batman, Elvis and maverick in its Live Action Feature Competition. He also named Pinocchio in its animated feature category and Lunar Reverie in its feature doc category.
Overall, the field is competitive with a diverse lineup of work that could hold some surprises when Oscar nominations come to light. But the Golden Reel and CAS Award nominations seem to signal an uphill battle for Babylon and wakanda foreverthe two shortlisted films that failed to earn nods from either company.
It’s only been two years since the Academy merged the sound editing and mixing categories, so it’s a little tricky to talk about precedents. In 2021, the winner of the Oscar for sound, The sound of metal, won the CAS Award for Live Action Feature Film, but, despite three nominations (Effects/Foley, Dialogue/ADR, Music), it did not win a Golden Reel Award for Sound Editing. In 2022, Dunes won the CAS Award in the Live Action Feature category and an MPSE Award, for Effects/Foley, en route to its Oscar for Best Sound.
