Dating app OkCupid is the latest company to jump on the AI and ChatGPT frenzy. The company’s head of global communications, Michael Kaye, told TechCrunch in an email that OkCupid is testing a new category of matching questions generated by the OpenAI chatbot. The news was first reported by Mashable.
The app’s matching questions let you define yourself and what’s important to you, and your match percentage with someone shows how compatible OkCupid thinks you might be. The app contains thousands of matching questions and is currently testing some that were generated by ChatGPT.
“At OkCupid, we’re always on top of trending conversations within the tech industry,” Kaye said. “And a topic dominating the discussions is ChatGPT. We first started asking our daters what they thought of the platform and other emerging AI tools, and found that daters who believe that ChatGPT is a lifesaver get almost 40% more matches than those who think it’s too big brother. This sparked an idea. What if we used ChatGPT to write our famous matching questions that feed our algorithm That’s when we decided to test this new category of questions, which users answered very well.
From there, OkCupid asked ChatGPT to generate questions people should ask when dating. Kaye said that so far these six questions have received more than 135,000 responses. Here are the questions generated by the chatbot:
- Are you more introverted or extroverted?
- Are you morning or evening?
- What’s your favorite way to spend a weekend?
- What do you value most in a partner?
- How do you know when to take a relationship to the next level? How do you balance your own needs with the needs of your partner in a relationship?

The questions showed that the majority of respondents see themselves as introverts and prefer the night to the morning. Responses also indicated that most people prefer spending time with friends on weekends to doing other activities, and trust is what they value most in a partner.
Considering that some dating app users have used ChatGPT to compose messages for their matches, it’s no surprise that OkCupid chooses to leverage the technology for its platform as well.
Since its launch a few months ago, ChatGPT has dominated the internet and has become increasingly popular. Earlier this week, Microsoft announced its integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into Bing, providing a ChatGPT-like experience in the search engine. The hype surrounding ChatGPT has seen Google strive to reassure investors and analysts that it is still a leader in AI development. The company is rushing to participate in the sudden fervor for conversational AI and recently announced Bard, its new AI experience.
