What there is to know
The Michigan State Spartans will return home after a two-game road trip. The Spartans and the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers will square off in a Big Ten battle at 2:30 p.m. ET Monday at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. The teams split their matchups last year, with MSU winning the first 68-65 at home and Purdue winning the second 75-70.
MSU fell short against Illinois Fighting Illini on Friday, losing 75-66. Guard Jaden Akins had a pretty forgettable game, finishing with just six points on 3-for-11 shooting in 34 minutes on the field.
Meanwhile, the Nebraska Cornhuskers usually have all the answers at home, but Purdue on Friday proved too much of a challenge. Purdue moved past the Cornhuskers with points to spare, winning the game 73-55. Four Boilermakers players scored in double figures: guard Fletcher Loyer (27), center Zach Edey (12), forward Mason Gillis (10) and guard Braden Smith (10). It’s been nine straight games in which Zach Edey has had at least ten rebounds.
The Spartans are now 12-5 while Purdue is 16-1. A few stats to keep in mind while watching: MSU stumbles into the contest with the 359th-fewest takeaways in college basketball, having amassed just 9.6 on average. The Purdues have had an even tougher time: They’re 353rd worst in college basketball in takeouts, averaging just 10.2. It’s possible that one of those Achilles heels will end up tripping up the losing team.
