A jury has convicted a Michigan man of murder and other counts for beating a 3-year-old boy to death in Lafayette.
Jermaine Garnes of West Bloomfield, Michigan was convicted of murder, negligence causing death, aggravated assault causing death, and assault and battery on a person under the age of 14 causing death. The jury returned the verdicts on Wednesday.
Garnes and his girlfriend, Crystal Lynn Cox, were both charged in August 2021 in connection with the death of 3-year-old Zeus Cox. The little boy was found dead on the floor of a bedroom with bruises on his chest, stomach and other parts of his body.

The couple gave conflicting accounts to police. Cox said he fell on concrete and then hit a table. Garnes told police that Zeus fell off his bicycle.

An autopsy revealed the 3-year-old died from multiple blunt trauma to his abdomen which ruptured the boy’s intestines and caused broken ribs and internal bleeding.
Cox was found guilty of murder, negligence causing death, aggravated assault causing death and assault on a person under the age of 14 causing death last May and was sentenced to 53 years in prison.
