Looking for how to tame a horse in Minecraft? These tamable Minecraft mobs can be used as a convenient way to explore new Minecraft seeds thanks to their fast speed and ability to pass through single block openings.
Minecraft horses can also climb hills, jump fences, and even swim in shallow water, making your pony the best transportation to explore. Once tamed, you will be able to equip your Minecraft horse with armor and a saddle. Be sure to watch your horse in survival and adventure mode, because when riding, your horse’s health will need to be watched in case you run into Minecraft ghosts recovering. While riding, you can use items as you normally would, including potions, weapons, or crafting an enchantment table or blast furnace.
If you don’t want to tame a new horse in Minecraft, you can breed your own by feeding two tamed horses to activate love mode – that’s an official term, by the way – so that they produce a foal. Foals cannot be tamed until they are older, but can be fed to speed up growth. Once your foal is big, or if you’re looking for how to tame a horse in Minecraft for the first time, read on.
How to tame a horse in Minecraft
There are a few requirements you will need to consider when taming a Minecraft horse. First, the horse has a temper meter from 0 to 100. Once you ride the horse for the first time, it will be assigned a taming threshold, which means unless the Minecraft horse exceeds that threshold taming, it will remain wild, however, you can influence this threshold by feeding the horse sugar, wheat or apples.
So how do you feed a horse in Minecraft? The horse will need to be hungry to accept the food, so keep that in mind. Simply select the food you want to feed the horse from your hotbar, hold it in your hand, approach the horse carefully, and use the food on the horse by clicking the right mouse button.
Don’t worry if you get pushed back at first, that’s completely normal and in fact quite realistic for wild horses. You will have to keep getting back on the horse until you reach the taming threshold, no matter how many times it discourages you. Once the horse reaches that magic number, hearts will appear above the horse – congratulations on your new pet!
Where to find a Minecraft horse
You will find Minecraft horses spawning in plains and savannahs in herds of around 2-6 – all herds are the same color, but the markings differ per horse. You can also find horses in Minecraft villages, naturally spawning in stables or animal enclosures.
Hopefully it won’t come to that, but if your Minecraft horse hits it, it will drop between 0-2 leather, 1-3 experience, and horse armor if equipped.
Minecraft horses aren’t the only lovable mobs; Minecraft bees are also lovely neutral mobs that can help you get a Minecraft honey block. Minecraft frogs are also coming in The Wild update, though we don’t yet know what they do – other than jumping around them, of course.
Once you have your prissy clip-clop, take it home and create one of these Minecraft farm ideas to make it feel right at home. This, uh, won’t affect the horse in any way, but it looks neat.
