The Creatives, an alliance of independent production companies from across Europe and beyond, has selected 16 screenwriters to take part in a session of brainstorming workshops aimed at developing ideas and pitches for new drama films and TV series top of the line.
The group, announced on Monday, includes veteran writers Thomas Bidegain, co-author of The Aries familythe 2014 French feature film adapted into English as winner of the 2021 Best Picture Oscar CODAas well as several collaborations with the French director Jacques Audiard, including a prophet (2009), rust and bone (2012) and The brothers sisters (2018); Israeli writer Sigal Avin, creator of AppleTV+ Lose Aliceand Dane Julie Budtz Sørensen, screenwriter of the Netflix series Rain and Selected.
The 16 writers, joined by 10 producers from The Creatives, will take part in three 5-day workshops across Europe this year. The first will begin this week in Île-de-France. The concept of the workshops will see writers and producers hearing from experts in different non-entertainment fields, including artificial intelligence, environmental studies, genetics and philosophy, with the aim of helping them create new stories.
Any ideas or concepts generated during the first workshop will be taken and explored in a pre-development workshop led by the Le Groupe Ouest senior residency program in March 2023, and then further shaped in a writers residency held in August 2023 The workshops are co-funded by the European Commission.
The Creatives, whose members include British band Good Chaos (triangle of sadness), France Haut Et Court (Income), the German Komplizen Film (spencer) and Razor Movie (Quo Vadis, Aida?), as well as the Dutch group Lemming Film, the Belgian Versus Production, the Norwegian Maipo Film, the Israeli group Spiro, the French Unite and the American production company Masha, have entered into a three-year partnership with the production giant Fremantle to develop and distribute any series or film ideas that come out of the workshops.
The other writers selected for the 2023 workshops are: Tawfik Abu Wael, writer on HBO’s Our boys; Tunde Aladese, the screenwriter of Kenneth Gyang’s 2018 feature film The lost coffee; Mette M. Bølstad, Co-Writer of Anne Sewitsky’s 2010 Sundance Grand Jury Winner happy happyand the NRK series state of happiness; Jan Schomburg, co-author of Maria Schrader i am your man (2021); and the writer/director of the 2011 feature film Above us only the sky; Irish writer Susanne Farrell (Derivative, dirty god); Turkish writer Mustafa Duygulu (macro mafia); and Ivan Szabo (The citizen) from Hungary. Also participating are Franco-Hungarian writer Judit Anna Bánházi, Finnish screenwriter Reeta Ruotsalainen, Cyril Tysz from France, Cecilia Verheyden from Belgium and Elena Lyubarskaya and Ipek Zübert from Germany.
Created in 2021, The Creatives is an attempt by these independent groups to respond to the seismic shifts in the international television and film industries driven by the explosion of streaming services around the world. While the streaming boom has spurred demand, it has also fueled consolidation on the production side – Fremantle, Banijay and other global giants have taken over many independent companies – and concentrated financial and creative power in the hands of producers. a small number of streaming and studio players.
