Duolingo is launching a new virtual tutor that aims to replicate real-world scenarios to help students learn better. And it’s all powered by the recently released GPT-4 AI model.
Make your home in the new Duolingo Max subscription level (opens in a new tab), the tutor consists of two features: Explain My Answer and Role Play. The first, as the name suggests, gives users the option, if they’re confused by something in DuoLingo’s initial response, to ask the Duo chatbot for a detailed explanation of why their response was correct. or bad. In an example video (opens in a new tab)the AI explains why certain Spanish verbs must be conjugated in a certain way given the context of the sentence.
Duo, however, is not universally available on all tongue exercises, only on some. Of these few, an Explain My Answer button will appear at the bottom of the screen after attempting an exercise.
Roleplay (opens in a new tab), on the other hand, allows users to engage in a realistic conversation with the AI so that they can practice their language skills. According to the post, no two threads will be exactly the same. In one case, you might be talking to a “waiter” while ordering coffee at a French cafe or discussing your vacation plans in Spanish with a “friend.” And at the end of each role play, Duo will give you feedback based “on the accuracy and complexity of [your] answers, as well as tips for future conversations.

Know that the GPT-4 AI behind Duo is not perfect. For the new version, the OpenAI research lab took the time to improve GPT-3’s chat capabilities so it could produce more natural text, similar to how people normally speak – at least in English. . GPT-4 can create language guides such as using English mnemonics for Spanish words. However, seen on Twitter (opens in a new tab), these mnemonic guides can be quite hilarious and not always in a good way. Duolingo admits its virtual tutor will make mistakes. As such, the company asks users to give the AI feedback which you can give by selecting the “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” emoji at the end of each Explain My Answer session.
Currently, Duolingo Max is experiencing a limited rollout. AI will only be available in Spanish or French for English-speakers on iOS, but is “planned to expand to more courses, language interfaces, and platforms in the coming months,” according to a company representative.
To subscribe to the level, you have two methods. You can either pay $29.99 for Duolingo Max or $167.99 for the whole year. Breaking it all down, the annual cost comes out to $13.99 per month. Plus, you also get all the features of Super Duolingo, which include “unlimited cores [for lessons]no advertising and [a] personalized exam via practice center. »
