A high-profile Taiwanese actor was seriously injured while filming on Netflix recently when a camera drone collided with his face.
Kai Ko suffered what his manager called a “severe disfigurement”, with his injuries requiring up to 30 stitches near his cheekbone, Variety reported.
The accident happened on December 27, but was only recently reported. This happened during the filming of a Mandarin-language fantasy series called Officer from aboveproduced by mm2 Asia of Singapore and Good Films Production of Taiwan.
The show’s producers told Variety that the crew has returned to work, but Ko has not yet returned to set as he has more time to rest and recuperate.
In a statement, the producers made a point of stressing that the crew used the camera-equipped drone in accordance with standard safety guidelines.
Notably, they explained that the propeller blades of the drone were “protected by a protective layer and that there was no explosion or bursting of the blades as indicated in some articles”.
He added, “We deeply regret that the accident happened and injured Kai’s cheeks. Kai immediately received medical treatment and his talent management team also arranged micro stitching for him.
The production team has launched a full investigation into the incident to try to understand how a shoot using a drone could have gone wrong.
In recent years, advances in drone technology have meant that flying machines are increasingly being used in television and film productions for a range of aerial and low-altitude shots. Such accidents are extremely rare during productions, so it will be important to find out how last month’s incident actually happened.
Netflix has yet to comment publicly on the drone crash.
Ko is a big star in Taiwan. He rose to prominence in the 2011 school drama You are the apple of my eyewhich was a big hit all over Asia.
